What is Southwest Airlines' liquid policy?

Security threats have put airlines on high alert. Because Southwest wants to avert any incident leading to injuries, you will have to follow special instructions on certain items. Liquids, aerosols and gels should be carried according to Southwest Airlines liquid policy. Here are a few myths about liquid policy and the reality.

·       Hand-sanitizers will be permitted. - All liquid or semi-liquid items, including hand-sanitizers, conditioners and shampoos will be put under scrutiny. 

·         Canned food will be permitted - They may also be put through additional screening.

·         Baby formula & baby food will not be allowed - A passenger along with an infant can bring them.

·         Eye drops will not be allowed - Only a limited quality will be allowed.

How many 3 oz Bottles can you Take on a plane?

You can bring as many 3-ounce (or smaller) bottles of liquids as can fit into a single, quart-sized, clear, resealable bag, as per the TSA's 3-1-1 rule. Up to 6 to 9 small bottles may be allowed depending on their shape and how you pack them. Here is what the 3 1 1 rule on Southwest International Flights entails for passengers.

·         Container size - Each container must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less.

·         Bag size - All containers must fit into one 20cmx20cm, clear, resealable bag.

·         One bag per passenger - Only one 20cmx20cm bag for each passenger.

Am I Allowed Liquids in my Checked Luggage?

Yes, you are allowed to pack liquids in your checked luggage, with the main restrictions being for hazardous materials. Items like gasoline, paint, bleach, and drain cleaner are banned from both checked and carry-on baggage because they pose a fire hazard or can be dangerous. Alcoholic beverages with 70% or more alcohol are not allowed. But those containing between 24% and 70% alcohol can be checked. Up 5 liters of alcoholic beverage is permitted in the hold.

·         Hand-sanitizers can be put in the hold.  

·         Chocolate (liquid) can be put in the hold

·         Gel ice packs must not be put in carry-on unless it is for cooling infant food.

Does Southwest consider Deodorant a Liquid?

Deodorant is either liquid or aerosol. Either way, it is covered under the Southwest Airlines liquid policy. Aerosols must not be above 2kg. Aerosol release device must be placed on containers to prevent accidental release. Take a look at the items which may be restricted.

·         Roll-on, Gel, or Cream - All of these must comply with the 3-1-1 rule for carry-on baggage: they must be in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, all fitting into one sealed, clear, 20cmx20cm bag.

·         Self-defense or pepper sprays - Southwest doesn’t allow sprays with more than 2% mass of tear gas.
